TAC briefed on performance of franchised bus companies

Members of the Transport Advisory Committee (TAC) were today (July 14) briefed on the performance of the franchised bus operators.  Members noted that the performance of the franchised bus operators was generally satisfactory in 2003.

"Despite being hard hit by the impact of SARS last year, the franchised bus operators had made improvements in a number of areas of bus services," TAC chairman Mr Jeffrey Lam said.

These areas included the continuous upgrading of the bus fleet by providing more environmentally friendly, air-conditioned and wheelchair accessible buses, beautification of bus terminuses to improve passengers' waiting environment.

He said that in the coming years, the franchised bus operators would have to face more challenges such as the opening of new railways and fluctuating oil prices.

"In the face of these challenges, the TAC urges the franchised bus operators to take measures to further enhance their efficiency and improve their operation.  This will be beneficial to both the companies and passengers " Mr Lam said.
