TAC discusses highway safety
The following is issued on behalf of the Transport Advisory Committee:
Members of the Transport Advisory Committee (TAC) were briefed on the Administration's response to the Report on the Enhancement of the Highway Safety, at their meeting today (January 27).
The Chairman of TAC, Dr Cheng Hon-kwan who also chaired the Tuen Mun Road Traffic Incident Independent Expert Panel said, "The Administration has considered the Expert Panel's recommendations and found them comprehensive and useful in enhancing highway safety."
Dr Cheng said that the administration had drawn up an implementation plan for key areas including driving behaviour, legislation and enforcement, traffic engineering and management, vehicle control and vehicular parapet design. There were also safety improvement measures for Tuen Mun Road and the 39 priority locations identified by the Expert Panel.
Among the key areas, Dr Cheng said all parties agreed that driving behaviour and attitudes had a great bearing on road safety. The Administration would explore effective avenues to spread road safety messages to the public.
"We are glad that the Government has accepted all the recommendations in the report and come up with these improvement measures," said Dr Cheng.
At the same meeting, the TAC members were briefed on the stage three public consultation for the Hong Kong 2030: Planning Vision and Strategy Study.
"We are happy to note that the study has been progressing well and that the Administration is considering the key assumptions for the formulation of possible planning choices and options as well as alternative scenarios for Hong Kong in the run-up to 2030. We hope the Administration will take full account of the comments received during the public consultation process and come up with a most suitable and sustainable development option for our future," said Dr Cheng.
